No free plan. The cheapest way in is Claude Pro at $20/month. Consider free alternatives in the browser agents category if budget is tight.
Cowork costs $100-200/month, which is substantially cheaper than hiring a human assistant for repeatable task types. It's also faster at file processing and document tasks, often completing hours of manual work in minutes. However, human VAs handle ambiguous requests, make judgment calls, and manage interpersonal tasks that Cowork cannot.
Some file operations require cloud processing through Anthropic's servers, so document contents may leave your machine during analysis. Anthropic states it doesn't train on user conversations by default, and enterprise customers can get additional data controls. For highly sensitive documents, review Anthropic's privacy policy and consider your organization's data handling requirements.
File organization, document summaries, data compilation, and repetitive desktop operations work well. The sweet spot is bulk file operations and routine data processing that would be tedious for humans but straightforward for AI to execute with clear instructions.
Not for regular use. The $20/month Pro tier has limited message capacity that most business workflows exhaust within a few days of sustained use. File analysis and multi-step Computer Use workflows consume messages significantly faster than text chat, since each action step uses capacity. Most business users should start with the $100/month Max 5x tier.
As of early 2026, macOS is the primary supported platform for desktop control features. Windows and Linux users can access Claude chat and document analysis via the web interface, but autonomous desktop control is currently macOS-only. Check Anthropic's announcements for the latest platform availability.
