Overview

What It Is

Cowork is an agentic mode within the Claude Desktop app — not a standalone product. It extends Claude from a chat interface into a desktop automation agent that can access your local files, navigate applications, and execute multi-step workflows. Think of it as Claude stepping out of the chat window and onto your actual computer.

What Cowork Delivers

File and document automation. Cowork handles organizing files, renaming documents based on content, creating folder structures, and summarizing information across multiple files. Tasks that take a human assistant 2-3 hours can finish in 10-15 minutes. Cross-application workflows. With the March 24, 2026 Computer Use update, Cowork navigates between applications using keyboard and mouse control, copies data, fills forms, and executes multi-step processes. It can open files, use the browser, and run dev tools automatically. The Dispatch feature lets you send instructions from your phone to work while you're away. Natural language task management. Instead of learning automation software, you describe what you want done. Cowork translates requests into actions and adapts to your file organization preferences over time.

How Computer Use Works

When Claude doesn't have access to the tools it needs, it will point, click, and navigate what's on your screen to perform tasks itself. This was announced March 24, 2026 for both Claude Cowork and Claude Code. It includes an AI safety classifier for routine actions and currently supports macOS desktops, with the ability to use the agent remotely via iPhone through the Dispatch feature.

Pricing

Cowork is available through Claude's existing subscription plans — there is no separate Cowork subscription:

  • Claude Pro (/month): Basic Cowork access with limited message capacity
  • Claude Max 5x (/month): ~225 messages per 5-hour period, full Computer Use and Dispatch
  • Claude Max 20x (/month): ~900 messages per 5-hour period, maximum throughput

File analysis and multi-step workflows consume messages faster than text chat, so most business users find the Pro tier insufficient for sustained Cowork usage.

Where Cowork Fits vs Alternatives

Broader than Claude Code. Claude Code targets developers in the terminal. Cowork targets knowledge workers on the desktop — file processing, research compilation, document management. More capable than Perplexity Computer for local files. Perplexity excels at web research but can't access your local file system. Cowork operates on your existing documents and applications. Simpler than scripted automation. No Selenium, no Playwright, no AppleScript. Describe what you want in English and Cowork handles the execution.

Platform Support

macOS is the primary supported platform. Computer Use was launched with macOS desktop control, and Dispatch works from iPhone. Windows and Linux support should be verified on Anthropic's website.

Editorial Review

Cowork is an agentic mode within Claude Desktop (not a standalone product) that brings desktop automation to non-technical users. The March 2026 Computer Use update adds full keyboard-and-mouse control on macOS, and Dispatch enables remote task assignment from iPhone. Best suited for routine file processing and document tasks, though sustained business use requires the -200/month Max tiers since Pro message limits deplete quickly with file-heavy workflows.

Key Features

Autonomous File Management+

Navigates your file system to organize, rename, move, and categorize documents based on content analysis — handles bulk file operations through natural language instructions.

Use Case:

Tell Cowork to sort 500 downloaded invoices into folders by vendor and year, rename them with consistent naming conventions, and create a summary spreadsheet.

Computer Use (Desktop Control)+

Controls desktop applications by pointing, clicking, and navigating your screen — enabling multi-app workflows that span browsers, office apps, and system tools. Includes an AI safety classifier for routine actions. Launched March 24, 2026.

Use Case:

Instruct Cowork to pull data from a web dashboard, paste it into a spreadsheet, format it, and email the finished report — all autonomously across three applications.

Dispatch (Remote Task Assignment)+

Send tasks to your desktop Claude from your iPhone or another device, allowing the agent to work on your computer while you're away.

Use Case:

While commuting, message Dispatch to organize your downloads folder, compile meeting notes from yesterday, and prepare a document summary — all ready when you arrive.

Document Summarization and Analysis+

Reads and analyzes documents, PDFs, images, and screenshots to extract information, create summaries, and answer questions about your files.

Use Case:

Point Cowork at a folder of 50 research PDFs and get a structured summary of key findings, organized by theme with source citations.

Natural Language Workflow Builder+

Describe complex multi-step tasks in plain English and Cowork translates them into executable sequences, adapting to your preferences over time.

Use Case:

Describe 'Check my downloads for new contracts, extract key terms, and add them to my tracking spreadsheet' and Cowork builds the workflow from your description.

Limitations & What It Can't Do

We believe in transparent reviews. Here's what Anthropic Cowork doesn't handle well:

    • ⚠Message capacity on Pro tier ($20/month) is insufficient for regular business use — sustained workflows require Max 5x ($100/month) or Max 20x ($200/month)
    • ⚠Computer Use feature can occasionally misclick or misread screen elements, particularly in non-standard or custom application interfaces
    • ⚠Cannot perform actions requiring authentication to external services unless those services are already logged in on the desktop
    • ⚠Complex multi-step tasks benefit from specific, structured instructions — vague requests may produce inconsistent results
    • ⚠No persistent memory between sessions — Cowork doesn't remember your preferences or organizational schemes from previous conversations without re-instruction

    Pros & Cons

    ✓ Pros

    • ✓Natural language interface requires zero technical knowledge — describe what you want and the agent executes without learning automation software
    • ✓Computer Use enables cross-application workflows that traditional automation tools can't handle without coding — move data between apps autonomously
    • ✓Dispatch feature allows remote task initiation from iPhone, so the agent works on your desktop while you're away from your computer
    • ✓Significantly faster than manual work for routine file processing, document summarization, and data compilation tasks
    • ✓Cost-effective at $100-200/month compared to full-time human assistants at $2,400+/month for repeatable task types
    • ✓AI safety classifier for Computer Use provides guardrails for autonomous desktop actions

    ✗ Cons

    • ✗High message consumption pushes most business users beyond Pro limits to the $100-200/month Max tiers within days of regular use
    • ✗Complex multi-step instructions may require iteration — breaking tasks into smaller, specific steps often produces better results than vague requests
    • ✗UX confusion between Cowork, Code, and Chat interfaces in Claude Desktop makes it unclear which tool to use for which task type
    • ✗Computer Use can occasionally misclick or misread screen elements, particularly in non-standard or custom application interfaces
    • ✗Cannot perform actions requiring authentication to external services unless those services are already logged in on the desktop

    Frequently Asked Questions

How does Cowork compare to hiring a virtual assistant?+

Cowork costs $100-200/month compared to $2,400+/month for a full-time VA. It's substantially faster at file processing and document tasks. However, human assistants provide consistent judgment and can handle nuanced communication. Best approach: use Cowork for routine file work and repetitive desktop operations, keep human assistants for tasks requiring judgment and interpersonal skills.

Can Cowork handle sensitive business documents?+

Some file operations may require cloud processing through Anthropic's servers. Anthropic states it doesn't train on user conversations. For highly confidential documents, review Anthropic's privacy policy at anthropic.com/privacy and consider whether cloud processing of file contents meets your compliance requirements.

What types of tasks work best with Cowork?+

File organization, document summaries, data compilation, and repetitive desktop operations work well. The sweet spot is bulk file operations and routine data processing that would be tedious for humans but straightforward for AI to execute with clear instructions.

Is the $20 Pro tier enough for business use?+

Not for regular use. Pro tier has limited message capacity that most business workflows exhaust within a few days. File analysis and multi-step workflows consume messages quickly. Start with Pro to test compatibility with your workflows, but plan to upgrade to Max 5x ($100/month) or Max 20x ($200/month) for sustained business use.
