Amazon's AI coding assistant that understands AWS — get code suggestions and cloud architecture help from an AI that knows Amazon's services.
Amazon Q Developer is AWS's AI coding assistant, built into the IDE and AWS Console. It generates code, explains existing codebases, and helps debug AWS infrastructure issues.
Q Developer sits inside VS Code, JetBrains, and the AWS Console. Ask it to write a Lambda function, explain a CloudFormation template, or troubleshoot why your ECS task keeps crashing. It knows AWS services deeply because it was trained on AWS documentation and architecture patterns.
The agent mode handles multi-file code changes. Describe what you want ("add DynamoDB caching to this API endpoint") and Q Developer modifies multiple files, creates IAM policies, and updates infrastructure configs. This works well for AWS-native apps. It struggles with non-AWS services.
The free tier is generous: code completions, chat, and basic security scanning at zero cost. No credit card required.
Q Developer Pro costs $19/user/month. GitHub Copilot costs $19/user/month for Individual or Business. Feature-for-feature, they're priced identically. The difference: Q Developer includes AWS-specific capabilities (infrastructure debugging, Console integration, security scanning) that Copilot lacks.
Q Developer wins on AWS infrastructure tasks: writing CloudFormation, debugging IAM permissions, optimizing Lambda cold starts, explaining billing anomalies. GitHub Copilot wins on general-purpose coding with broader language support and community ecosystem.
For teams running 80%+ on AWS, Q Developer is the better pick. For multi-cloud teams, Copilot offers more flexibility.
Q Developer scans code for vulnerabilities and AWS misconfigurations at no extra cost. This replaces basic SAST tools that typically cost $20-50/developer/month.

Amazon Q Developer matches GitHub Copilot at $19/user/month but adds AWS infrastructure intelligence. Free tier is generous for solo developers. For AWS-native teams, Q Developer saves hours on CloudFormation debugging and IAM policies. Security scanning included at no extra cost replaces $20-50/month SAST tools.
