TextFX

TextFX is a free AI writing experiment from Google Lab Sessions and rapper Lupe Fiasco that helps writers, lyricists, and creatives explore language through 10 AI-powered linguistic tools, with pricing set permanently at $0. It is designed for rappers, poets, songwriters, copywriters, and creative writers who want to expand their vocabulary, craft wordplay, and break through writer's block.

Launched in August 2023 as a collaboration between Google's AI team and Grammy-nominated rapper Lupe Fiasco, TextFX was originally built on the PaLM 2 large language model and exposes the model through 10 distinct creative tools: Simile, Explode, Unexpect, Chain, POV, Alliteration, Acronym, Fuse, Scene, and Unfold. Each tool transforms an input word, phrase, or concept into multiple stylistic variations — for example, Simile generates creative comparisons for any noun, Alliteration produces phrase candidates that share a common consonant, and Unexpect rewrites a scene to add surreal or surprising elements. Users can adjust a "randomness" slider per tool to control how conventional or wild the output gets.

Unlike general-purpose AI writing assistants such as Jasper, Copy.ai, or ChatGPT, TextFX is narrowly focused on the linguistic craft layer of writing rather than long-form drafting, marketing copy, or SEO content. Based on our analysis of 870+ AI tools, it occupies a unique niche as a free, no-signup creative-writing playground rather than a production tool — there's no document editor, no project saving, no API, and no team features. It runs entirely in the browser at textfx.withgoogle.com, requires no Google account, and was open-sourced on GitHub so developers can study how the prompts behind each effect were engineered.
