Stagewise is an open-source agentic coding experience for frontend developers — it bridges the browser preview and the editor so an AI agent can see what you see and edit accordingly.
Stagewise is an open-source, extensible coding agent built for the frontend developer's actual workflow: you're in the browser, something looks wrong, and you need the AI to understand the live DOM rather than guessing from a code snippet. Stagewise installs as a browser overlay plus an editor companion (Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf, Zed, etc.) and lets you click an element in the running app, attach context, and route the request to an AI agent that already has both the source code and the rendered output.
The model story is unusually pluralistic — Stagewise routes through Kimi, Qwen Coding Plan, MiniMax, OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, DeepSeek, and others. Bring your own provider keys, mix and match for cost/quality. The codebase is open-source and protected by an EUIPO trademark; first-class community support is a stated value (the homepage explicitly highlights its open-source extensible nature).
Because Stagewise hooks into your existing editor rather than replacing it, MCP support flows naturally: agent workflows can connect editor and browser context to MCP tools, but you should verify the current MCP client/server status on stagewise.io because the integration is evolving fast.
Where Stagewise wins: visual bug fixing ("this button is misaligned, fix it"), iterative UI edits where the agent benefits from seeing the rendered output, and teams who want a frontend-specific agent on top of their existing Cursor/VS Code setup without abandoning it. The open-source + multi-provider stance is also appealing if you're cost-sensitive or worried about lock-in. Where it falls short: it's frontend-focused, so backend-heavy work falls back to your underlying editor's tools; and as a younger project, documentation gaps and breaking changes are still common. Best for: frontend engineers, design-engineering teams, and anyone whose work blurs the browser/editor boundary.
