Speechify reads PDFs, documents, webpages, books, and scanned text on iOS, Android, macOS, Windows, Chrome, Edge, and web. Its homepage reports 60+ million users, 1+ million five-star reviews, and 1,000+ AI voices. It also offers voice typing, document questions, podcasts, summaries, voice generation, dubbing, Studio, and an API, but these do not all share one subscription.

Pricing and features

Free is $0 with text-to-speech only, playback to 1.5x, and 10 “robotic sounding” voices. Premium is $29 monthly on the fetched view. It includes 1,000+ natural voices, 60+ languages, playback to 5x, Scan & Listen, summaries and chats, Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, voice typing, podcasts, and the voice assistant. Enterprise and EDU require pricing contact. Studio and API are separate, so $29 does not imply commercial narration or application usage.

A student can scan a handout, a professional can listen while commuting, and a writer can proofread by ear. Compare production voices through ElevenLabs, transcript editing via Descript, cleanup from Cleanvoice AI, and noise control from Krisp.

Honest assessment

Cross-platform coverage, scanning, and a real free tier are strengths. $29 is substantial for a reader, free voices are limited, and separate product packaging complicates comparison. OCR can misread scans; voices mispronounce names, formulas, code, and citations; summaries can omit qualifiers; audio cannot convey every chart or footnote. Test 10 items including a poor scan, tables, mathematics, names, and two languages. Measure OCR errors, pronunciation corrections, setup time, completion, and comprehension. Confirm retention for school or workplace files. Speechify fits when listening measurably improves access or completion; occasional users may find built-in operating-system speech sufficient.

Practical evaluation

Run a two-week pilot on one bounded workflow before granting broad access. Use at least 30 representative tasks, including invalid input, permission failures, stale records, provider timeouts, and recovery cases. Record completion rate, factual or technical correctness, p50 and p95 latency, human review minutes, and total cost per accepted result. Start with read-only scopes and a test workspace where possible. Inspect the exact tools exposed to an agent, then add write access only after an owner defines approval, audit, and rollback procedures. Confirm retention, regional processing, subprocessors, data export, rate limits, support terms, and whether customer content is used for model training.

Build an annual cost model from real volume. Include subscriptions, metered usage, implementation, identity administration, monitoring, reviewer labor, and incident response. Add a 25% volume buffer and test cancellation or export before committing. A purchase is justified when the measured time and risk reduction exceed those costs; a polished demo alone is not evidence of production value.
