Smithery is infrastructure for discovering and connecting agents to Model Context Protocol servers. Its public site centers on an MCP registry and connection layer rather than a general-purpose chatbot or agent builder. Developers can find integrations, connect clients to servers, and use managed OAuth and secure credential storage instead of reproducing every authorization flow inside an agent. Namespaces help organize published resources, and RPC-based plans align cost with calls made through the service.

Product role and alternatives

Smithery is useful when the bottleneck is finding and operating MCP integrations. It differs from Model Context Protocol, which defines the open standard but is not itself a hosted registry. GitHub MCP Server and Filesystem MCP Server are individual servers, while Smithery helps clients discover and connect to a broader set. LangChain covers agent orchestration and application logic, so the two products can be complementary rather than interchangeable.

The live pricing page states that Smithery connects to MCP servers with managed OAuth and secure credential storage. The Hobby plan is free and includes 50,000 RPCs per month plus three namespaces. Pay as You Go costs $10 per month; RPCs consume the included $10 of credits and then cost $0.10 per 1,000. A Custom plan requires contact and adds everything in Pay as You Go, custom rate limits, an uptime SLA, and Slack support. This usage model is easy to start with, but teams must estimate how one user request expands into MCP calls. One workflow may invoke several discovery, read, and write operations, so application volume and RPC volume are not identical.

The main advantage is reduced integration friction: a registry shortens discovery, hosted connectivity reduces per-client setup, and managed OAuth can simplify delegated access. The corresponding risk is an additional dependency in the tool path. Availability, rate limits, credential handling, server provenance, and registry metadata all affect the agent even when the underlying MCP server is healthy. A listing also should not be treated as a security review. Inspect source, ownership, requested scopes, network destinations, and update practices before allowing a server to access repositories, files, email, or production systems.

Start with a read-only server and 1,000 representative requests. Measure successful RPCs per task, latency, authentication failures, retry behavior, and projected monthly cost. Test revoked OAuth consent and unavailable servers, then confirm that the application fails closed instead of silently choosing a different action. For private or regulated workloads, verify credential encryption, retention, logs, regional processing, namespace visibility, SLA terms, and export. Smithery offers the most value to teams using several MCP clients or servers; a developer with one local server may prefer a direct configuration with fewer moving parts.
