Overview

OmniRoute is a free, open-source (MIT) AI gateway that connects your AI coding tools to a single endpoint backed by 237 providers, more than 90 of which offer a free tier. Point tools like Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Cline, GitHub Copilot, and Antigravity at one local endpoint (http://localhost:20128/v1) and OmniRoute translates between OpenAI, Claude, Gemini, and Responses API formats so every tool just works. Its flagship feature is Combos: chains of models that OmniRoute routes across automatically, so when a quota runs out, a provider fails, or costs spike, it silently slides to the next model in milliseconds. A zero-config 'auto' model builds a virtual combo from your connected providers, with variants like auto/coding, auto/fast, auto/cheap, and auto/offline, and there are 17 routing strategies you can mix and match. A four-tier auto-fallback (subscription, API key, cheap, free) keeps you productive without hitting limits, and cost-optimized routing sends requests to the cheapest viable model. OmniRoute also includes RTK plus Caveman stacked compression that cuts 15 to 95 percent of eligible tokens (about 89 percent average on tool-heavy sessions like git diffs, grep output, and logs), stretching every free tier further. It aggregates roughly 1.6 billion documented free tokens per month across provider pools and shows a live used/remaining budget on its dashboard. For builders, OmniRoute is production-grade with circuit breakers, TLS fingerprint stealth, a three-level proxy, guardrails, evals, agent-to-agent (A2A) support, and a memory layer, backed by 21,000+ tests. It is private and local-first, and is distributed via npm, Docker Hub, and Electron desktop builds. OmniRoute has full CLI, A2A, and MCP support, exposing 95 tools over the Model Context Protocol so agents can plug into it directly.

Best Use Cases

🎯

Aggregating free LLM tiers to avoid rate limits and API bills

⚡

Unifying multiple coding agents behind one local endpoint

🔧

Reducing token costs with automatic compression on tool-heavy sessions

🚀

Reliable failover routing for production AI workflows

Limitations & What It Can't Do

We believe in transparent reviews. Here's what OmniRoute doesn't handle well:

  • ⚠Self-hosted only — no managed multi-tenant endpoint
  • ⚠TLS fingerprint stealth and free-tier aggregation sit in a legally gray area with some vendors
  • ⚠Broad configuration surface takes time to master

Pros & Cons

✓ Pros

  • ✓Genuinely free and local — no gateway markup on top of already-free provider tiers
  • ✓Auto-fallback across four tiers keeps coding agents productive when providers throttle
  • ✓RTK + Caveman compression measurably extends free tiers on tool-heavy coding sessions

✗ Cons

  • ✗Self-hosted only — no managed endpoint for teams that want it hosted
  • ✗TLS fingerprint stealth and multi-tier free-tier routing sit in a legally gray area with some vendors
  • ✗Setup surface is broad (17 strategies, 4 fallback tiers, MCP, A2A) — expect a learning curve for full config
