Mistral OCR is Mistral AI's purpose-built document understanding API, positioned as a high-accuracy, low-cost successor to traditional OCR engines for the LLM era. Unlike pure text-extraction tools, Mistral OCR preserves document structure: headings, multi-column layout, lists, tables, mathematical equations, and embedded images all come out as clean Markdown that downstream models can ingest without further cleanup. The model is trained for 11+ languages, handles handwriting, and is unusually strong on scientific PDFs, legal briefs, financial filings, and slide decks — the kinds of documents that break commodity OCR. The API is offered through la Plateforme as a metered endpoint with per-page pricing that is significantly cheaper than comparable enterprise OCR services. For sovereignty-sensitive customers, Mistral also offers on-prem and VPC deployment so the OCR runs entirely inside the customer's environment.
