Magenta Studio is a suite of free, open-source AI music generation tools built on Google's Magenta machine learning research project and designed to work seamlessly inside Ableton Live as Max for Live devices. Originally released as a collaboration between Google's Magenta team and Ableton, it brings cutting-edge generative models directly into the workflow of producers, composers, and sound designers, letting them create, extend, and transform MIDI patterns without leaving their DAW. Unlike cloud-based AI music platforms that generate finished audio tracks, Magenta Studio operates on symbolic MIDI data, giving users full control over instrumentation, sound design, and arrangement while using AI purely as a creative idea generator.

The suite consists of five distinct devices, each targeting a specific creative task. Generate produces brand-new four-bar melodies from scratch using a trained neural network. Continue extends an existing melody or drum pattern by predicting what could come next, useful when producers get stuck partway through a phrase. Interpolate blends two different MIDI clips together, morphing between them to create hybrid patterns that sit between the originals. Groove takes a stiff, quantized drum pattern and adds humanized timing and velocity variations learned from recordings of real drummers. Drumify generates a drum performance that complements an existing rhythm, giving producers quick percussion ideas that fit the feel of their track.
