Kimi is the flagship AI assistant developed by Moonshot AI, a Beijing-based company founded in March 2023 by Yang Zhilin, Zhou Xinyu, and Wu Yuxin — all Tsinghua University alumni. Moonshot AI has rapidly become one of China's most prominent AI companies, often grouped among the country's so-called AI Tigers for its ambitious pursuit of artificial general intelligence through large language models.

The platform's most recent milestone is the Kimi K2.5 model, released in January 2026.
