Kimi CLI

Kimi CLI is Moonshot AI's official command-line coding agent, released open-source in mid-2026 as a direct competitor to Anthropic's Claude Code and OpenAI's Codex CLI. It runs entirely inside your terminal, gives the Kimi K2 and Kimi K2 Instruct models full access to the shell, file system, and long-lived project context, and lets you drive multi-step engineering work with the same conversational flow as an IDE agent. Because the underlying models support extremely long context windows (128k tokens and up), Kimi CLI is particularly comfortable in large monorepos where it can read entire modules before it edits a file.

Beyond raw code generation, Kimi CLI ships with a Model Context Protocol client so you can plug in MCP servers for GitHub, Postgres, Playwright, Chrome DevTools, and any other external system. It supports session resumption, diff-based file edits, sub-agent spawning, and configurable approval modes so you can sandbox destructive commands. Because it is Apache-licensed, teams that need to keep prompts, telemetry, and model traffic on their own infrastructure can point it at self-hosted Kimi endpoints or any OpenAI-compatible provider. It is a strong pick if you already run Kimi models in production, want a Chinese-language-first coding agent, or need an OSS alternative to closed CLIs while still getting MCP support.
