Overview

GitLab Duo Agent Platform brings specialized AI agents and multi-step flows into GitLab’s software-delivery lifecycle. Agents can plan work, generate and refactor code, create tests, review merge requests, diagnose failed CI/CD pipelines, analyze security findings, modernize applications, and transform issues into merge requests. Teams can use GitLab-built agents, customize their own, or integrate external agents such as Claude Code and Codex. An AI Catalog centralizes discovery and administration, while GitLab Orbit provides a lifecycle context graph connecting code, issues, merge requests, pipelines, and deployments. Relevant alternatives include GitHub Copilot Agents, Cursor Agent, CodeRabbit, and Amazon Q Developer.

Current pricing combines GitLab plans with pooled usage credits. Free is $0 per user per month and allows AI features through purchased GitLab Credits. Premium costs $29 per user per month billed annually and, during a limited promotion, includes $12 in credits per user monthly. Ultimate uses custom pricing and currently includes $24 in promotional monthly credits per user. Additional GitLab Credits cost $1 each, are shared across the organization, and can receive volume discounts with an annual commitment. The vendor says usage billing covers synchronous agent interactions and asynchronous flows. GitLab.com Free also includes 400 compute minutes and 10 GiB storage; Premium includes 10,000 minutes and 500 GiB per project. Self-Managed customers need GitLab 18.8 or later for Duo Agent Platform, and current included-credit promotions can change.

The strongest fit is an organization already standardizing repositories, issues, CI/CD, security, and governance in GitLab. An agent that can see an issue, associated code, pipeline failure, deployment, and security policy has more useful context than a standalone coding assistant limited to an editor. Policy-driven controls can restrict which agents, flows, and models are allowed, and flow sessions expose triggers plus CI/CD job logs. Self-Managed deployments can use self-hosted models, which matters for organizations with residency or model-control requirements. GitLab also lists Model Context Protocol integrations, although access and credit requirements vary by plan.

Run a pilot on a representative repository rather than measuring autocomplete volume. Track accepted code-review findings, successful pipeline fixes, escaped defects, review time, credit consumption, and the percentage of generated merge requests that pass tests without major human rewrites. Test permission boundaries with protected branches, secrets, forks, and cross-project context. Require a human approver for merge, deployment, and vulnerability disposition.

GitLab Duo’s advantages are lifecycle context, built-in governance, event-driven flows, and a catalog that can include external agents. Its disadvantages are usage-cost uncertainty, best value for teams already committed to GitLab, version requirements for Self-Managed users, and changing promotional credits. AI output can still introduce insecure code or incorrect remediation. The platform is differentiated less by raw model access than by connecting agents to governed DevSecOps context. For GitLab-centered enterprises, that can be valuable; for teams using several disconnected development platforms, integration and migration costs may outweigh the consolidation benefit.
