Google's next-generation autonomous research agent that represents a step change for AI-powered research capabilities.
Deep Research Max is an autonomous AI research agent from Google that conducts multi-step, long-horizon research tasks and produces comprehensive synthesized reports, available through Gemini with a freemium tier and higher quotas on paid Google AI plans. It is designed for analysts, researchers, students, and knowledge workers who need depth rather than quick answers.
Announced on April 21, 2026 by Google researchers Lukas Haas and Srinivas Tadepalli, Deep Research Max represents the next generation of Google's Deep Research agents and is built on the Gemini 3.1 Pro model family. Unlike a standard chatbot turn, the agent plans a research brief, searches and browses the open web, evaluates source credibility, and iteratively refines its plan before writing a long-form report with citations. The "Max" tier extends runtime, reasoning depth, and the number of sources the agent is willing to explore, which Google positions as a step change in autonomous research quality over the original Deep Research released in late 2024.
Compared with the other research tools in our directory â including OpenAI's Deep Research, Perplexity Deep Research, and You.com Research â Deep Research Max differentiates itself through native integration with the Google ecosystem (Search index, Workspace, YouTube context) and the long-context reasoning of Gemini 3.1 Pro. Based on our analysis of 870+ AI tools, Deep Research Max is best suited for users who already rely on Gemini or Google Workspace and who value breadth of web coverage and a polished report format, while lighter alternatives may win on speed or price. Access is included free with Gemini at lower usage limits and scales up through Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra subscriptions, making it accessible for casual use while also serving heavy research workflows.

Deep Research Max is powered by Gemini 3.1 Pro, Google's long-context reasoning model. This gives the agent the ability to hold many sources in memory at once and perform multi-step reasoning across them, which is what enables the jump in research depth over the 2024-era Deep Research.
The Max tier significantly extends how long the agent is allowed to run and how many sources it can consult before writing its report. This is the core differentiator versus the standard Deep Research tier and lets the agent tackle ambiguous, multi-faceted questions rather than stopping after a shallow pass.
The agent builds a research plan, searches the web, opens pages, and refines its plan as it learns. Users can review and steer the plan before the agent executes, which reduces the risk of wasting a long run on a misinterpreted question.
Outputs are structured reports with inline citations rather than raw link lists or short chat answers. The format is designed to be directly usable for analysts, students, and consultants, and plugs into Google Workspace for downstream editing.
Delivered inside the Gemini app, Deep Research Max benefits from access to Google Search's web index and sits alongside Workspace, Gmail, and other Google tools. This makes it a natural fit for users already standardized on Google rather than assembling a third-party research stack.
