GitHub's agentic dev environment for everyday tasks — take an issue, produce a spec, get a plan, generate the code, and open a PR.
GitHub Copilot Workspace is a Copilot-native task environment from GitHub Next that reframes the developer's job around a linear flow: pick a GitHub issue, review an AI-drafted specification, edit the plan, and then have Copilot generate the code changes across multiple files before opening a pull request. Unlike inline autocomplete or a chat pane bolted onto an editor, Workspace treats software work as an editable, reviewable pipeline where humans stay in the loop at each step: the spec can be tweaked in prose, the plan can be reordered or trimmed before code is written, and the resulting diff can be edited inline. It runs in the browser (no local install), connects directly to a GitHub repo, and outputs a normal PR against the repo's default branch that reviewers can treat like any other change. Copilot Workspace supports issue-to-PR for feature work, bug fixes, and refactors, and it can build and run the code in a hosted sandbox to verify the change before opening the PR. It's now integrated with GitHub Copilot subscriptions and available to organizations as part of Copilot Enterprise. For teams already living inside GitHub, Workspace is the least-friction way to hand off a well-defined issue to an AI and get back a reviewable PR.
