OpenAI's Codex CLI is the open-source terminal-native counterpart to ChatGPT Codex — the same coding-tuned GPT-5 family, but running in your local shell with full file, git, and tool access. Codex CLI is written in Rust, ships as a single binary, and can operate in three modes: interactive (you approve each command), auto-edit (it applies file changes but stops before running shell commands), and full-auto (headless, sandboxed via `sandbox-exec` on macOS or `landlock` on Linux). Because it is genuinely open source (Apache 2.0), teams can vendor it, audit it, and swap the model backend for any OpenAI-compatible endpoint, including Azure OpenAI or self-hosted vLLM.

The 2026 releases turned Codex CLI into a first-class MCP client. You register MCP servers in `~/.codex/config.toml`, and the agent can call them alongside its built-in file, shell, and web tools. It also supports session resumption, structured planning, and background sub-agents that fan out work across the repo. Pricing lives in your OpenAI or ChatGPT subscription rather than a Codex-specific SKU: ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise all include a monthly Codex usage allowance, and API users pay the standard per-token GPT-5 rate.
