Claude currently offers three tiers: Haiku 4.5 (fast and cheapest at $1/$5 per million input/output tokens), Sonnet 4.6 (balanced at $3/$15 per MTok), and Opus 4.6 (most capable at $5/$25 per MTok). Haiku handles high-volume simple tasks like classification and extraction, Sonnet covers most professional work including coding and analysis, and Opus excels at complex reasoning, research, and creative tasks. All three support extended thinking, though it's most impactful on Opus for multi-step problems. All three also support tool use, vision, and long contexts up to 200K tokens (with 1M available on Sonnet via the API).
Claude Code is a terminal-based AI coding agent that runs in your development environment and can explore codebases, read and modify files, execute shell commands, run test suites, and create git commits. It's included with Pro ($20/month), Max ($100-$200/month), and Team plans at no extra cost, with usage scaled to your plan tier. Team plans offer premium seats ($125-$150/month per user) with higher Claude Code usage limits for engineering teams. Unlike Cursor or GitHub Copilot, Claude Code operates as a true agent — it plans tasks, executes multiple tool calls, and reports results rather than just autocompleting code.
Pro costs $20/month (or $17/month billed annually) and includes access to all models, Claude Code, Projects, Research mode, and significantly more usage than Free. Max starts at $100/month for 5x Pro usage or $200/month for 20x Pro usage, plus higher output limits and early access to new features like extended thinking presets. Based on our analysis, Pro is sufficient for most professionals, but Max becomes worthwhile if you regularly hit Pro usage limits during intensive Claude Code sessions or long-document analysis. Claude has the broadest MCP ecosystem — it supports both local MCP servers (connecting to databases, file systems, dev tools) and remote MCP connectors (cloud services without local setup). Anthropic created the MCP standard in late 2024, so Claude's implementation is the reference. ChatGPT has plugins and GPT Actions but does not support MCP natively.
