BoltAI is a native AI workspace for macOS that puts more than 300 cloud and local models behind one desktop interface. It works as a bring-your-own-key client: users connect accounts from providers such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, Mistral, xAI, Azure OpenAI, Amazon Bedrock, and Perplexity, or run local models through Ollama. The purchase price covers the application, not tokens. That distinction matters because a heavy Claude or GPT workload can cost more than the BoltAI license, while local inference may have no per-token bill but requires capable hardware.
BoltAI combines ordinary chat with reusable agents, document question answering, image generation, code execution, dictation, inline editing, and Model Context Protocol tools. Chats are stored locally by default, and API keys can be protected with a user passphrase. Its native interface, global shortcuts, and Instant Chat overlay are meaningful differences from browser-only assistants for people who work across editors, email, and documentation all day. Users comparing the underlying assistants can review Claude and ChatGPT; Ollama is the relevant option for local models, while Model Context Protocol explains the tool standard BoltAI consumes.
BoltAI publishes perpetual-license pricing: Essential costs $79 for one desktop device; Pro is $99 for two desktop devices plus one mobile device; and Pro+ is $199 for three desktop devices plus two mobile devices. Each includes one year of updates. The Team perpetual plan costs $99 per seat with a five-seat minimum, and the optional renewal is $79 per seat per year. The vendor says a lapsed license continues running the last eligible version, but cloud sync, mobile access, support, and future updates require renewal. A 30-day money-back guarantee is advertised. Provider API charges are separate and should be included in any monthly cost estimate.
BoltAI is best for a Mac power user who switches models frequently, wants local chat organization, and prefers a one-time software purchase over another assistant subscription. It is weaker for mixed Windows/Linux teams, administrators needing mature centralized governance, or users who do not want to manage API keys and provider billing. Local storage improves privacy but does not automatically make every workflow private: prompts still leave the device when a cloud model or remote MCP tool is used. Before adopting it for client or company data, test key encryption, cloud-sync settings, document retention, tool permissions, and export. Run the same ten representative prompts across two providers, record quality and token cost, and verify whether switching models actually saves enough time or money to justify another desktop layer.
