Bifrost AI Gateway unifies 1,000+ models with routing, budgets, observability and MCP governance. Review free OSS and custom enterprise pricing.
Bifrost is an open-source AI gateway from Maxim that puts one OpenAI-compatible API in front of more than 1,000 models. Applications can change the base URL instead of maintaining provider-specific integrations. The gateway handles virtual keys, budgets, rate limits, custom routing, provider fallback, semantic caching, asynchronous inference, and request transformations compatible with LiteLLM. It runs as a Docker container, in Kubernetes, or as a Go binary.
The observability stack is concrete. Bifrost exposes HTTP and provider metrics, OpenTelemetry-compatible traces, native Prometheus metrics, request logs, and a real-time dashboard. Teams can attribute spending across virtual keys, teams, and customers. A mocker plugin provides deterministic provider responses during tests, while a streaming JSON parser can repair partial chunks. Compare these controls with LiteLLM, Portkey, and managed aggregation through OpenRouter.
Bifrost operates as an MCP client and server gateway. It connects to tool servers, executes and hosts tools, handles OAuth, exposes a gateway URL, and filters tools through allowlists per virtual key. MCP Code Mode lets a model write Python combining several tool calls in one execution; the vendor claims this can cut tokens by more than 50%. Enterprise adds federated authentication for turning internal APIs into user-authorized tools. Benchmark savings and safety with your own tools before relying on that percentage.
The vendor’s agent-readable pricing page confirms Bifrost OSS is free forever. The plan includes the gateway, OpenTelemetry, observability, budgets, limits, keys, routing, CLI, fallbacks, caching, MCP, Code Mode, prompt repository, and plugins. Bifrost Enterprise uses custom pricing and offers a 14-day free trial. Enterprise adds guardrails, cluster mode, adaptive balancing, SAML/OIDC SSO, RBAC, vault integrations, audit logs, exports, VPC/on-premises/air-gapped deployment, SLAs, and dedicated support.
Free software is not free operations. Include compute, replicated storage, on-call work, telemetry retention, upgrades, and model usage in total cost. Obtain a dated quote and map every required control to its plan.
Pilot Bifrost with production-shaped traffic to two providers. Measure added p50/p95 latency, fallback success, cache quality, budget enforcement, trace completeness, and timeout behavior. For MCP, test OAuth expiry, denied tools, malicious output, and write approvals. Bifrost is a strong option for teams wanting an open gateway plus MCP governance; teams wanting a managed endpoint may prefer OpenRouter. Use the production monitoring guide and MCP overview to define acceptance tests.
Before committing, assign an owner, a four-week test period, a baseline, and a measurable pass threshold. Record successful completions, failures, retries, human correction time, total fees, and downstream usage costs. Recheck the vendor price and contract on the purchase date because features, allowances, and promotional terms can change after this research date.
