The editorial take
Choose LlamaCloud if you want parsing plus hosted indexing and LlamaIndex-native application workflows in the same platform. Choose Unstructured if your use case is mainly document partitioning and preprocessing that will feed an independently managed RAG or data pipeline.
LlamaCloud - Pros & Cons
Pros
- ✓LlamaParse is best-in-class for complex PDFs like 10-Ks, contracts, and medical records
- ✓Eliminates the need to choose and operate a vector database for most RAG projects
- ✓Tightly aligned with the LlamaIndex framework, so prototype code transfers cleanly
- ✓Multi-provider LLM choice avoids embedding model lock-in
- ✓Built-in evaluation harness is rare among managed RAG platforms
Cons
- ✗Per-page LlamaParse pricing adds up fast for high-volume document ingestion
- ✗Less flexible than rolling your own pipeline with Pinecone or Weaviate for unusual workloads
- ✗Evaluation framework still requires effort to assemble a useful golden dataset
- ✗Private deployments are gated behind enterprise contracts only
- ✗No official MCP server yet — community wrappers exist but lack support guarantees
Unstructured - Pros & Cons
Pros
- ✓Broadest connector library in the document ingestion category — most teams will not outgrow it
- ✓Genuine Apache 2.0 open-source escape hatch from the managed platform
- ✓Pre-built destination connectors mean RAG ingestion is wire-and-go for major vector stores
- ✓Scheduling and incremental refresh are in the box, not bolted-on afterwards
Cons
- ✗Table-extraction accuracy on truly adversarial documents trails specialists like Reducto
- ✗Platform tier gets expensive once you turn on many connectors and high-throughput parsing
- ✗Open-source library moves fast — production users need to pin versions deliberately
- ✗Less precise structured-extraction API than purpose-built tools (Reducto extract, LlamaParse)
